The Wireless Application Protocol (WAP) continues to move into the mainstream of Web development at a feverish pace. With user-base forecasts ranging from few hundred million into the billions, there\'s little doubt WAP applications will become more and more commonplace. It should come as no surprise, then, that many Web developers are planning to WAP-enable their Web applications. Because WAP and Wireless Markup Language (WML) are direct descendants of HTTP and HTML, Web developers will find working with WML as easy – if not easier – than working with HTML. WML can be thought of as essentially a slim-downed version of HTML that is optimized for wireless connectivity.

In the past few months, we have seen a lot of articles describing how WMLScript can be used to perform client-side validation and complement WML applications that runs on a WAP device. One particular application that is very popular is a currency converter. However, the conventional currency converter usually hardcodes the exchange rate in the WMLScript program. Once the WMLScript is downloaded onto the device, it is cached and any changes to the currency conversion rate would not be reflected in the application.

WML is a markup language that is based on XML (eXtensible Markup Language). The official WML specification is developed and maintained by the WAP Forum, an industry-wide consortium founded by Nokia, Phone.com, Motorola, and Ericsson. This specification defines the syntax, variables, and elements used in a valid WML file.

With the advent of WAP, more and more sites are being re-coded in WML to cater to WAP devices. While coding in WML is relatively easy, it can be a daunting task if you need to maintain multiple sets of WML documents for different WAP devices since at the moment they all have very different look-and-feel.

WMLScript is the WAP corollary to the JavaScript scripting language that was popularized by Netscape Communications. Standardization efforts by Netscape helped produce the ECMAScript standard, a standard that WMLScript was based on. While JavaScript has since been coopted by server tool vendors (including Netscape and Microsoft), WMLScript is a client-only scripting platform used in combination with WML to provide client side procedural logic.

Ever since the release of the WAP 1.0 specification in the Spring of 1998, the Web development community quickly has embraced the Wireless Application Protocol (WAP) standard as a means for connecting wireless devices to their Web applications. As the WAP development grows, questions filter in to Allaire\'s DevCenter

In a previous article, we made our initial foray into XSLT and XPath, finishing with an example that demonstrated the transformation of XML into HTML. Now that we have seen the stylesheet for transforming XML into HTML, we can now look at how we can transform XML into WML.Looking at the stylesheet below, you can see that it is quite similar to the stylesheet for transforming to HTML. Before we look into the differences, let\'s see how this stylesheet can be applied to the XML document.

The purpose of this article is to address the apparently widespread wave of pessimism surrounding WAP technology and of its impending demise!. There are many articles currently being pushed from pillar to post around the Internet, about how WAP is about to fall down around our ears and how WAP is no good, people don\'t like it and it\'s unreliable! I thought I would take some time out to give a different viewpoint.
